Introduction
“Relationships are all there is. Everything in the universe only exists because it is in relationship to everything else. Nothing exists in isolation. We have to stop pretending we are individuals that can go it alone”.
-- Margaret Wheatley
I have experienced both the excitment, enthusiasm and commitment of people at work, as well as the failed efforts, missed deadlines, finger pointing and blaming, because of failed communication and relationships with people.
As an experienced Organizational Development professional, I have worked with thousands of managers and employees in class and have asked them this:
“How many of you are independent of others in getting work done and can complete your work alone?” No one has ever raised their hand.
And when I ask: “How many of you could do more and get things done on time if the communication you had with others was improved?” All of them raise their hand.
None of us in business can go it alone. It takes a village if you truly want to be successful.
Organizations succeed when they are both smart and healthy. In other words they balance the yin and yang or the human side with the business side. Of course, smart organizations make the right intellectual decisions and do the right things right. But healthy organizations have the capacity to take advantage of those decisions by minimizing confusion and politics among employees and foster open communication and commitment to partnering together to get things done.
There is an overwhelming need for support from others in order to be successful in business and organizations and yet I have heard so many stories about a pervasive sense of dissatisfaction with our work relationships and how communication with others is less than effective. I have learned from these stories the key elements of what needs to be addressed now in order for organizations to not only survive - but thrive in the future. It’s time to create a cultural revolution at work where we experience powerful conversations with each other and connected relationships and come away knowing that we have each other’s back when it comes to getting our work done. We can’t do it alone. And I am on a mission to help.
The purpose of this Blog is to serve as the introduction of a new philosophy about how work gets done through partnership with others.
